The beaver, which is tied to the water habitat, is a special feature of the nature park. In the Saarland part of the nature park, beavers were reintroduced after the complete extermination of the largest European rodent on two rivers (from the Elbe region): on the Ill and in the Noswendeler stream valley. Beavers live sociable in families in their self-built "castles", as the dams made of branches and small trees are calle
The largest European owl species belongs to the so-called "eared owls", whereby the tufts of feathers referred to as ears have nothing to do with the actual ears. The owl weighs up to 5 kg - but only the females, the males are about a third smaller, which is why they are also called "Terzel".
Another hunter of the air, the peregrine falcon, is even more endangered. As an "air hunter" (he kills all of his prey in flight), the peregrine falcon is not tied to a special habitat, but also needs rock walls as nesting and breeding grounds. Areas with rich bird life are preferred (birds up to the size of ducks are popular prey). However, the peregrine falcon avoids closed forests. During a walk on the Kaiserweg along the Saar steep slopes near Mettlach, there is the possibility, with a bit of luck, of spotting peregrine falcons.
